Prof Dr Emmanouil Anagnostou

Prof. Emmanouil Anagnostou is Team Leader of a Marie Curie Excellence Grant at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research-Institute of Inland Waters and Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Connecticut with research experience and expertise on remote sensing applications in hydro-meteorology and the prediction of natural hazards (floods, hurricanes, severe weather, lightning, etc.). In the past decade he has concentrated on advancing knowledge on precipitation estimation from space and ground based sensors, and the optimum assimilation of remote sensing data in atmospheric and hydrological models for the prediction of hazardous floods and flash floods.

He is recipient of several prestigious awards: 1999 NASA Earth Sciences Directorate New Investigator Award, 2002 NSF Geosciences Program CAREER Award, and 2003 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award by the School of Engineering of the Univ. of Connecticut. Special emphasis is put on two top-level European awards he received: the EGU Plinius medal, in 2002 for outstanding achievements in the field of Natural Hazards and important interdisciplinary activity involving remote sensing and hydro-meteorological research areas, and 2) the EC Marie Curie Excellence Award, in recognition to pioneering work on precipitation remote sensing and optimal assimilation in weather and hydrological models, as well as for his innovations in multi-sensor global rainfall measurement that expanded the boundaries of global water & energy cycle research.

He is PI of several research projects in Earth Sciences and Natural Hazards funded by NASA, the US NSF and the European Commission.

He is member of several international organizations, author or co-author of more than 80 journal papers and several book chapters in hydrological remote sensing, and weather/climate and hydro-meteorological applications.
