Dr. Maria Tzortziou

Dr. Maria Tzortziou is currently a Marie Curie Experienced Researcher in the Institute of Inland Waters, of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) Greece. She has been research scientist at the University of Maryland, UMD, (2004-now) and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, GSFC, (1999-now) in the US, with research associate appointments at the Smithsonian Institute (MD, USA). She holds a B.Sc. degree on Physics (1997; Aristotle University, Greece) a M.Sc. degree in Environmental Physics (1999; Aristotle University, Greece) and a M.Sc. degree in Meteorology (2001; Univ. of Maryland, USA). She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (UMCP), Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Department, in 2004, followed by a post-doctorate position at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in the US (2004-2006). Her research interests are in the areas of bio-optical oceanography; ocean carbon cycling; photochemical and microbial degradation of coloured dissolved organic matter in wetlands, estuarine and coastal ecosystems; underwater radiative transfer modeling; development, validation and performance evaluation of satellite algorithms for remote sensing retrieval of biogeochemical variables in coastal regions; atmospheric correction for ocean colour; radiative transfer in the atmosphere (atmospheric spectroscopy, remote sensing techniques/algorithm development, ultraviolet radiation, tropospheric ozone, trace gases); atmosphere-ocean interactions.
